A fun post, celebrating the beauty and variety of autumn leaves, and helping (I hope!) to distinguish between them. This is by no means comprehensive, but I’ve included 12 of the commonest deciduous trees here in Scotland.
Beautiful! I have learned to love many of these trees, though I haven’t yet visited Scotland. We have a number of them here in the States, and I have seen others in Ireland and England. I was able to obtain 3 small rowan saplings this year and have planted one in the front yard, the other two are in pots to be planted in a week or two. There are white birches already living here on my new home in Ithaca, NY, and I have planted 2 small English hawthorns, and European elders. It is my plan to have hazel, beech, and as many of the 13 Druid trees as I can find. These photos are very inspiring!
What a wonderful plan! I love your choice of trees. They will give you some wonderful seasons of interest and colour. Really glad that these photos inspired you. I’m looking forward to getting out and admiring the colours this year – before the winds sweep them away!
This is just what I need at the moment – I’m trying to identify the trees and plants in the garden and surrounding area, as I’ve only recently moved here! Thanks – smile
That’s really good! So glad you find it useful. I’ve enjoyed learning to identify trees myself, by their leaves, and I’m still learning! It’s good fun.
Thank you, Lorna, glad you enjoyed it! I enjoy trying to identify trees too, through all the seasons. Found what we think is a whitebeam the other day, by Loch Leven. Need to find out a bit more about them, I think!

I love looking at the leaves in the autumn in forested areas, but as for my own trees, I do not care to rake the leaves up!

It’s a full-time job, especially when you have lots of mature trees!

Lovely colours!

I love the variety of colour in different trees. We’re getting loads of wind at the moment – may not be much left on some of them!

Very nice display of that nice variety. I really liked seeing the ID’s!

Thank you! It’s interesting to see the variations in colour. The season is a different length every year, too, depending on the wind!

Jo I do love autumn especially the colours in a wood of many tree species, it’s just magic and the start for the spring.

I love it too! It’s my favourite season, especially with the quality of the light.

Great idea for a post, I enjoyed guessing the trees. 🙂 Lovely photos, too.
