Starting a new photographic mini-series of old doorways…

The St Andrews Preservation Trust Museum is in a lovely old house in the centre of St Andrews, not far from the Cathedral.    This photo of the front garden was taken in late August.   The flowers by the gate are old cottage garden roses, while by the door are pots of geraniums and fuchsias.

    I love pictures of doors. Maybe it’s the anticipation of what’s behind them. This is beautiful with the stone and silvered wood. And that garden is so inviting!

    Oh dear, I took lots of doors in St Andrews and that was one of them, minus the plants, but there are some wonderful ones, there was a lovely pale pink one, wonder if you got that one. Lovely pic with the flowers 🙂

    Love this! Doors are such a great subject, and this one has a lot of character. I know I’ve commented before on my love for your photos of St Andrews as a graduate of the university, and poking about the old part of town – the north end near the cathedral, as the museum building is – was always a favorite way to pass time between lectures!

      Thank you! Yes, it just had all the elements of a beautiful photo. You could spend hours in St Andrews taking photos, and not moving very much at all! We also discovered the buildings and gardens of St Mary’s College, purely by accident, and I was thrilled because they are just so beautiful, with the old trees and sundial outside. I’ve been reading various tales about hauntings around the Cathedral grounds – when you were a student, did you come across any stories or have any spooky experiences?

        I heard several stories, but can’t say I experienced anything myself! One I remember is the White Lady in the cathedral grounds – something about a woman being walled up in one of the towers of the wall. If you look at the towers on the wall facing the sea, one is square and the others are round (I think I have that right – could be the other way round) and the square one is the haunted one. I also remember stories about various lights/sounds in the castle grounds, the Pends are supposedly haunted as well but can’t remember any specific stories. One of the university dormitories – the tower section of Wardlaw Wing in University Hall – is supposed to be haunted by a former student, I believe. Oh, and the ghost of a monk in/near St Rules Tower. Oh! And ghostly sounds of fishermen at the harbor when it’s misty. Clearly it is a great place for spooky stories!

        Wow – thank you very much for sharing this! I had heard of the White Lady, and the ghost in St Rule’s Tower. I’m planning to write something in more detail, when I’ve done a bit more research! I’ve got to say I’d have been a bit uneasy about going up the tower if I’d heard these stories beforehand. St Andrews is certainly a hub of spooky tales, as you rightly say! 🙂

        I was thinking about this some more after I wrote my last comment, and I believe the haunting in the Pends is supposed to be a ghostly Bishop’s carriage. Interested to see what you write about these stories!
