Tales of the riverbank

If you asked Colin what his favourite food was, he would probably tell you it was fish.   He is happiest when he’s by water – whether it’s a river, a loch or the sea – and he’s just discovered a new interest in fly fishing.

Until now, Colin hasn’t produced any major paintings of fish, but that’s about to change!  He is half-way through this painting of two brown trout.

The first image is his working sketch, and the other two show the painting in progress.   I’ll keep you updated as it develops.

Magnificent!!! I do think Colin will enjoy everything involved with fly fishing. I haven’t gone in a few years, but the times spent on the water or at the fly tying bench have been some of the best ever!

Thank you very much, David! Colin is already learning lots about different flies, and he has been very lucky with his fishing experiences so far. Learning fly-tying is going to be next on his list!

Hi , Jo! Terrific painting! Thanks for sharing Colin’s painting in progress, such a treat! Nothing beats fly fishing, and the connection one feels standing in moving water, and feeling the strike of a fish on a fly! I took it up 16 years ago, and haven’t touched a bait rod since. ?

Thank you, Julie, on Colin’s behalf too! Colin is already ‘hooked’ on fly fishing (sorry!), he’s had a lesson from an expert, and he is now looking forward to fishing in some great places this year. I think it’s going to be an enduring passion!

Thank you very much, Carmen! It’s quite exciting seeing a subject he’s never painted before, emerging like this. The second fish (as you can see!) is going to be a big one… I’ll keep you posted!

It’s amazing to see the progress and I love the colours of this. Painting underwater scenes must take a different sort of skill, perhaps more awareness of light and shade. I don’t know how I’d even begin to go about it. Looking forward to seeing the second fish.

I’m looking forward to it too, Lorna! Certainly the reflections of the water surface on the pebbles, and the perspective of the river bed, are things that Colin hasn’t attempted before. I usually try to help with constructive criticism, but knowing very little about fishing means I’m not much help in this instance! I can only tell him what I think looks right overall.
